2The same came to Jesus past night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that yard art a instructor come from God: for no man can practice these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a homo be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the 2nd time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Marvel non that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8The wind bloweth where it listeth, and yard hearest the sound thereof, just canst not tell whence information technology cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is built-in of the Spirit.

3:5 Except a man be built-in of water and of the Spirit - Except he feel that bully inward change by the Spirit, and be baptized (wherever baptism can be had) as the outward sign and means of it.

Joh 3:five Except a human be born of water and [of] the Spirit, etc. Jesus does non reply directly to the question of Nicodemus, but proceeds to give more than explicit statement concerning the new birth. One must be built-in of water and of the Spirit. Any this may mean, information technology will be admitted by all (1) that no i is a member of the kingdom of God until he is born over again; (ii) that the Savior declares the impossibility of 1 entering who is not born of water and of the Spirit. All concur that the birth of the Spirit refers to the in, or spiritual change that takes place, and all candid authorities agree that "born of h2o" refers to baptism. So Alford, Wesley, Abbot, Whitby, Olshausen, Tholuck, Prof. Wm. Milligan, the Episcopal Prayer Book, the Westminister Confession, the M. Eastward. Discipline, and M. E. Doctrinal Tracts, and too the writers of the early Church all declare. Alford says: ``All attempts to get rid of this accept sprung from doctrinal prejudices.'' Abbott says: ``We are to sympathise Christ equally he expected his accountant to understand him. John the Baptist baptized both Jew and Gentile as a sign of purification past repentance from past sins. Nicodemus would then have certainly understood by the expression, "built-in of water", a reference to this rite of baptism.''
